How might convergence affect the production, distribution, marketing and exhibition?
Convergence can affect the production, distribution, marketing and exhibition of the company. In this essay I am going to talk about the different ways in which convergence can affect the different stages of the film industry.
First of all, there is the production of the film. The production is the group of people who have the idea of the film ready to create. The production team put all of the arrangements, pretty much everything such as the props, actor’s locations in place ready to make the film. With the use of convergence within production, other production companies may converge to create a new product and this could be looked upon a positive, as the production is expanding creating a wider range of different productions and products.
Secondary, there is the distribution side of the film. The first type of distribution once the film is ready to show is when it is distributed to cinemas. The cinemas tend to be the first because it being a new film that everyone will want to pay money to see, this creating lots of revenue. Convergence could reflect this on a negative way though because if the distribution gets into the wrong hands the film could be affected by piracy, this creating loss of revenue for the films makers and producers. The recent distribution most recently was the row between the Alice in Wonderland film because only certain cinema has the right to screen it. This created a stir because the filmmakers queried screening in cinemas, and as an alternative, they thought about putting it onto DVD instead. Therefore distribution could be looked at into two different ways depending on what your opinion thinks about the matter.
Furthermore, convergence could also affect the marketing side of a film. If the film is a big success, marketing merchandise for the film could be a great converge for the merchandising industry and the film industry creating more publicity for the film to more people and also on the other hand creating revenue at the same time therefore in my own opinion I believe that convergence from the marketing side would have a great affect.
Exhibition also could also be affected by convergence. Exhibition is the retail branch of the film industry. It involves not the production or the distribution of motion pictures, but their public screening, usually for paying customers in a site devoted to such screenings, the movie theater. What the exhibitor sells is the experience of a film (and, frequently, concessions like soft drinks and popcorn). Because exhibitors to some extent control how films are programmed, promoted, and presented to the public, they have considerable influence over the box-office success and, more importantly, the reception of films. Therefore this shows the converging for the exhibition is affected in a good way as the exhibition is benefits through lots of convergence as it makes the film makers and producers more revenue.
