Lesson 4- Kidulthood's process of Distribution, Productionand Exhibition

Produced in 2006, Kidulthood a British Drama Film which involves a number of issues occurring in the lives of a group of teenagers in Ladbrooke Grove and Latimer road area based in the inner streets of West London. The Film was the first production from the new production team called 'Revolver'. The British film being produced by this production team has a negative, because of being produced by a new production team means that they have very few links within the film industry, therefore promotion for the film would be hard to achieve. Achieving a good finance background for the film was always going to be hard, thus the film was helped by the film council by receiving money to support the making of the film.

Another Disadvantage for the film getting promotion is that the actors are not known, therefore , it may put of people who look for the big names. Big names will always produce good amount of views through its audience, but because of the film having unknown actors the promotion Will be very little as they haven't got a big name to base there film Upon, this is called a ensemble cast .

There is also another disadvantage for the film because the film directed is not a well known accomplished director. The director of Kidulthood is Menhaj Huda. Other then small films and productions this was his first break...

Essay Question 3

How does convergence affect the way in which we consume films?

Convergence could affect the way in which we consume the films we watch in many ways, for example though the convergence of the film industry and the industry of the Internet, people are beginning to watch the films on the net creating piracy which is illegal. this is changing the ways in which we watch these films as people are not wanting to go to the cinema anymore because of constantly rising prices and instead finding the film on the internet and watching it through there. This could reflect the way convergence could be seen as a bad affect of convergence through the film industry. A positive could be that merchandising industry could be made from the film creating good amounts of revenue and therefore this could be seen as a good convergence. Overall i believe convergence creates good and bad affects and therefore convergence could never be seen as one of these...

Essay Question 2

How might convergence affect the production, distribution, marketing and exhibition?

Convergence can affect the production, distribution, marketing and exhibition of the company. In this essay I am going to talk about the different ways in which convergence can affect the different stages of the film industry.

First of all, there is the production of the film. The production is the group of people who have the idea of the film ready to create. The production team put all of the arrangements, pretty much everything such as the props, actor’s locations in place ready to make the film. With the use of convergence within production, other production companies may converge to create a new product and this could be looked upon a positive, as the production is expanding creating a wider range of different productions and products.

Secondary, there is the distribution side of the film. The first type of distribution once the film is ready to show is when it is distributed to cinemas. The cinemas tend to be the first because it being a new film that everyone will want to pay money to see, this creating lots of revenue. Convergence could reflect this on a negative way though because if the distribution gets into the wrong hands the film could be affected by piracy, this creating loss of revenue for the films makers and producers. The recent distribution most recently was the row between the Alice in Wonderland film because only certain cinema has the right to screen it. This created a stir because the filmmakers queried screening in cinemas, and as an alternative, they thought about putting it onto DVD instead. Therefore distribution could be looked at into two different ways depending on what your opinion thinks about the matter.

Furthermore, convergence could also affect the marketing side of a film. If the film is a big success, marketing merchandise for the film could be a great converge for the merchandising industry and the film industry creating more publicity for the film to more people and also on the other hand creating revenue at the same time therefore in my own opinion I believe that convergence from the marketing side would have a great affect.

Exhibition also could also be affected by convergence. Exhibition is the retail branch of the film industry. It involves not the production or the distribution of motion pictures, but their public screening, usually for paying customers in a site devoted to such screenings, the movie theater. What the exhibitor sells is the experience of a film (and, frequently, concessions like soft drinks and popcorn). Because exhibitors to some extent control how films are programmed, promoted, and presented to the public, they have considerable influence over the box-office success and, more importantly, the reception of films. Therefore this shows the converging for the exhibition is affected in a good way as the exhibition is benefits through lots of convergence as it makes the film makers and producers more revenue.

Essay Question 1

The importance of convergence to the film industry

Convergence is very important to the film industry. In the terms of cross media convergence of a film, it is the convergence of two industries integrating together to produce a new type of product. In this essay I am going to write about how the production of a film company comes together with another industry to produce a new product to bring revenue in for the film. The development of convergence has grown immensely due the development of the film making industry and the stronger technological side of films being produce to such a high standard creating the film to be so successful that the industry could produce a new product based on the film.

First of all, Convergence is happening within all of the modern films. For example the James Bond film makers came together with the gaming industry to produce the game 007. This explains convergence very simply as the makers of the film join with the gaming industry to produce the James Bond game, this producing convergence with the two industries. Other convergences due to the film are merchandise, cards, clothing, phone wallpapers, collectable figures, magazines, comics and even board games. These are all different convergences with all of them being different industries therefore showing how much convergence can be produced due to one film. Thinking about the amount of convergence a film can produce, this brings in lots more revenue for the company.
